SOCCER
The high school soccer season is now over for the area after both the New Braunfels and Smithson Valley girls were beaten in their Region Quarterfinal matches last night. The Unicorns were beaten by Churchill 2-nil at Unicorn Stadium; the Chargers scored both of their goals in the second half, the first New Braunfels had given up in the post-season. Gabby Lopez had eight saves in last night’s loss; New Braunfels finishes the season with a record of 12 wins, 9 losses and 4 ties. Smithson Valley’s girls lost at Pflugerville Hendrickson l last night 4-1; the four goals given up tied a season high for the Rangers who had allowed just 2 goals the entire post-season prior to last night’s match. Sioned Kirkpatrick scored Smithson Valley’s lone goal last night; the Rangers close out their season with a record of 13 wins, 6 losses and 7 ties.

SOFTBALL
Nobody in the area played a full seven innings last night as New Braunfels, Canyon AND Smithson Valley each posted run rule victories on the road while extending multi-game winning streaks. New Braunfels is on a seven game winning streak after run-ruling Wagner last night 14-3 in Converse. The Unicorns scored 9 runs in the 6th inning of last night’s game and has now scored 55 runs during its streak which has run New Braunfels’ overall record 17-4 on the season, 7-1 in 25-5A play. The Canyon Cougarettes are on a three-game winning streak of their own, run-ruling Clemens last night 11-0 in Schertz to improve to 21-4, 7-2 in district. After four scoreless innings, Smithson Valley exploded for 6 and 7 runs n the 5th and 6th innings respectively in a 13-0 victory at Alamo Heights last night as the Rangers maintained their one game lead over Canyon for first place in the 27-4A district.

BASEBALL
A day after a cement truck drove through the team’s right and left field walls, the New Braunfels Unicorns suffered their first district loss of the season with a 7-3 defeat to San Marcos at Unicorn Field last night. The Rattlers broke open a scoreless game by scoring 6 runs in the top of the 6th inning. A sloppy game saw the two teams combine for seven errors, four committed by New Braunfels; the loss drops the Unicorns to 17-5, 5-1 in district. Canyon’s baseball team suffered its third straight loss last night with an 18-5 loss to Alamo Heights at Cougar Field. The Mules pulled away late scoring 11 runs in the final two innings of the game; the loss drops the Cougars to 8-14, 3-6 in district. Smithson Valley won its third game in a row last night with an 8-3 win over Lehman at Ranger Field; with the win the Rangers are 6-2 in 27-4A play, good for a tie for first place with Clemens.
