Seguin Attorney Indicted in Guadalupe and Comal Counties; Other Headlines from Across South-Central Texas
Out of Seguin: The Gazette reports that Seguin Attorney Deborah Perry has been hit with two indictments, one in Guadalupe County and one here in Comal County. Perry is the wife of Jeffery Perry, who faces 30 years in prison if convicted on recent federal charges of wire fraud. And now the local attorney faces a state jail felony herself, after a Comal County Grand Jury indicted her on witness tampering charges. And she faces a 3rd degree felony in Guadalupe County after the Grand Jury there indicted her on making a false entry on a government record, specifically a bail bond. Perry now faces 6 months to 2 years in jail on the state jail felony charge and 2 to 10 years in prison on the tampering with a government record charge. The Gazette reports that the indictments were secured by a prosecutor from the state Attorney General’s Criminal Prosecution Division.
Out of San Marcos: Fair warning…the TABC along with San Marcos and Hays County law enforcement officials say they will be out in full force today looking for underage drinkers trying to use a fake ID to get alcohol. “Operation Fake-out” and “Cops in Shops” are two programs that put officers at the front door of bars and clubs in the downtown San Marcos Square, looking for those trying to pass off fake ids as real. Undercover officers will also be at retail stores watching for underage drinkers attempting to purchase alcohol. Officials say the programs have a double impact, since they help curb underage drinking, and they help root out those that undermine national security by flooding the area with high quality fake ID’s.
Out of Martindale: The Daily Record reports a deadly accident on Labor Day Monday is being blamed on a drunk driver, and a Converse woman has been arrested as the person responsible. 37-year old Ebony Runnels of Converse is accused of intoxication assault and intoxication manslaughter after an accident that killed a 22-year old Lockhart woman and her 12-year old sister. Anna Tovar and her sister Carla Vasquez died at the scene of the crash on Hwy 80 in Martindale, between Quail Run Road and Hwy 142. Runnels is accused of trying to pass at a high rate of speed, ran off the road, over-corrected, veering into Tovar’s car, and pushing it into the oncoming lane of traffic, where their car was hit by an oncoming Ford F-350 driven by a 36-year old Kyle man, who tried to swerve before the accident, but still collided with the car. The man, his wife, and their 2 children were all later taken to the hospital and then released. Tovar and Vasquez died at the scene. And Runnels was uninjured in the incident and has since been placed under arrest in what is being called Martindale’s first traffic fatality in 14 years.
Out of Kerrville: The Express News reports that after nearly half a million dollars was found inside an SUV at a rest stop along I-10, local prosecutors are now starting forfeiture proceedings to get that money. The 438-thousand dollars in cash was found hidden inside the Nissan Armada this past Saturday at the Kerrville area rest stop along I-10. The Express News reports that 46-year old John Levendosky of Los Angeles was arrested after officers pulled him over at the rest stop for failing to use his turning signal. Officers became more suspicious when they smelled both marijuana and fresh paint inside his car, and after searching the vehicle, they found the cash in compartments in the wheel well and below the windshield. The man was arrested, charged with money laundering, and he remains in the Kerr County Jail with bond set at 900-thousand dollars.
