Plane Crash in Port Lavaca Kills Austin Doctor and Passenger

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

(Port Lavaca, TX) -- Authorities say an Austin doctor died after the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed in Matagorda Bay Sunday. Dr. Lyle Koen, an Austin-area ophthalmologist, is reported as the pilot of the experimental plane that landed in the water near Port Lavaca, about halfway between Corpus Christi and Houston.  Search crews have found part of the plane’s fuselage, and they recovered one body from the wreckage, but they are still searching for the remaining pieces of the airplane, and one other victim. Meanwhile, searchers in Gilchrest say a man in his 60’s died after he was pulled by the tide into the gulf near Galveston.  Authorities say the unidentified man went swimming yesterday afternoon and kept drifting further away from land.  Crews continue to search for his body.
