Part of Movie Set Damaged by Fire Outside Austin
(Austin, TX) -- The Austin American Statesman reports that lightning is suspected as the cause of a wildfire that destroyed part of the set for the 2003 film "The Alamo," and charred nearly 200 acres just outside of Austin. Lake Travis fire officials say that the fire broke out around 6:30 last night when lightning in the area is believed to have struck the film set near Hamilton Pool Park, about 24 miles west of downtown Austin. Fire crews were focusing on containing that fire, which spread to nearby brush, eventually spreading to the nearby Reimers Ranch Park, which was then evacuated. The blaze reportedly destroyed seven structures from the set of “The Alamo” film, but no injuries were reported. Parts of that fire still burn this morning.
