Hwy 281 ‘Super-Street’ Construction Now Underway

Friday, December 10th, 2010

After a groundbreaking last week, construction began in earnest yesterday on 281, north of 1604. The Express News reports that TXDOT is reconfiguring that part of 281 into what’s called a ‘super-street,’ which will change up the intersections at Encino Rio, Evans Road, Stone Oak Parkway, and Marshall Road, in an effort to reduce traffic congestion. The ‘super-street’ plan was proposed after a lot of outcry over plans to build a new toll road along 281 north, and this new plan is designed to avoid those toll roads, at least for the next few years. The 5.1-million dollar project will only allow traffic on side streets to turn onto 281 in the direction that the highway is going on that side, but then provides dedicated turnarounds at the next intersection if you were wanting to go the opposite direction on 281. The idea is to eliminate cross traffic, and therefore eliminate stopping traffic at signals. Construction is scheduled to wrap up in September, and most of the work will happen overnight.
