High School Basketball: Tournaments Begin Today Including The Canyon/New Braunfels River City Classic
Canyon and New Braunfels are hosting the annual River City Classic and that tournament will get underway get underway today. The Unicorns will be the first local team to take the floor when they face Warren, and New Braunfels Head Coach Greg Woodall on what he’s looking for from his team out of this tournament. “We’re going to have to match the intensity we’ve seen night in and night out, and I think it’s really going to test our bench.” And while they’re deep and 8 to 9 guys a game score, he thinks they have to step up so they “don’t get worn down.” And on the schedule his team will face over the next 3 days. “It’s a tough 4 game schedule” as they’ll face Warren, Steele, Canyon, and Judson, “probably as tough a 4 game schedule as you can draw” but that they came in with an attitude that they “have to compete, and we will play whoever we step on the floor with.” New Braunfels and Warren will tip-off at 6:00 tonight from the Cougar Den.
The Cougars open the tournament against Steele and Canyon Head Coach Brad Lacey says “Warren, Judson, and New Braunfels, and even Steele who will be going 5A next year, we’re the little guy in this one” and that even though they’re the small fry, they’re “looking forward to it, and it’ll be a good test for us.” And Cougar Guard James Poss is looking forward to a rematch with Steele after this past weekend at the Seguin Tournament saying “We are really looking forward to Thursday against Steele, we played them in the Seguin Tournament we were down 21 and came back in the 4th quarter and forced overtime, but fell short” and knows that in this tournament no matter who the opponent “we’ve got to be ready.” The Cougars and Knights will tip-off at 7:30 tonight in the Cougar Den.
In other tournament action the Smithson Valley Rangers take part in the Hays Rebel Classic over the course next 3 days.
And also taking part in the Hays tournament today are the Canyon Cougarettes since the Rebel Classic is a boy’s and girls tournament. The Cougarettes open up tournament play today against Pflugerville Connally at 4:30, and then will play the Lehman Lady Lobos at 7:30 this evening.
