Attic Fire Destroys Home Off Loop 337 and Common Street Thursday Afternoon
(New Braunfels, TX) -- A fire inside of the attic of a home off Common Street and Loop 337 destroyed the home, left one firefighter injured, and shut down traffic in the area for a couple of hours.
The fire broke out around 2pm yesterday inside the attic of a home in the 12-hundred block of Common Street, just off Loop 337. No one was home at the time of the fire, but numerous calls were made to 911 reporting the blaze and New Braunfels Firefighters were on scene within a matter of minutes.
When they arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the structure, and the fire was so intense crews had to use an aerial truck to fight back the flames from outside of the home. They also called in help from several nearby agencies including Canyon Lake, San Marcos, Schertz, and Seguin.
All four lanes of Common Street, from Fair Lane (by the Guadalupe River) to the Loop 337 intersection, were closed so that firefighters could run hoses across the roadway to fire hydrants on the other side of the street.
It took about an hour to get the fire under control and extinguished, with most of the damage contained to the attic area, but the damage caused the roof and entire ceiling to collapse in, resulting in a total loss of the structure. Damage estimates to the home and contents were set at around 180-thousand dollars.
There was one injury reported: a New Braunfels firefighter was taken to Christus New Braunfels Hospital for heat exhaustion and was released a short time later.
The city Fire Marshall’s office conducted their investigation, and while the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, the initial ruling is that the fire was accidental.
The section of Common Street that had been closed down was reopened around 5pm and crews remained on scene until about 8:30pm, looking for hot spots and making sure the fire didn’t rekindle.
