Conflicting Barricades: Bexar and Comal County Crews Treat Flooded Roadway Differently
A report in the San Antonio Express News details the timeline of events that led to the death of County Line BBQ restaurant owner Randy Goss. According to the Express News report, the bridge on Specht Drive, where Goss apparently drove his car into rushing runoff water, had been barricaded on the Comal County side of the county line, while Bexar County workers did not barricade their side of that same area, leaving it open for Goss to drive right into the rushing water. Comal County officials say their side of the road was blocked off around 7:45 when he saw 3-feet of water above the roadway. But workers on the Bexar County side said they checked the road at 9pm, and decided not to barricade it, although they did barricade Bulverde Road where it crosses the Cibolo Creek, about 3 miles downstream. Bexar County officials say that they regret no barricades were put up, but they added that the responsibility ultimately falls on the driver to avoid flooded crossings.
